Coaching Cycles: A Coaching Call with Malia Oshiro, Ep. 126 Buzzing with Ms. B: The Coaching Podcast

Any instructional coach who has tried to initiate coaching cycles on their campus knows how complicated and challenging it can be. We struggle to build relationships with teachers and help them understand how coaching cycles can support them, rather than being one more thing added to their plates. Gradual Release with Coaching Cycles, Ep. 125 Buzzing with Ms. B: The Coaching Podcast

Has this ever happened to you?

You model in a classroom as part of a coaching cycle, and you feel like things are going really, really well. The teacher responds positively and talks about how they can use the learning in their classroom. So, you think, Great, this is happening! Then you visit a few days later, and nothing has changed at all. 

Many coaches have told me that they struggle with teachers who get stuck and don't implement new learning from coaching cycles. The teachers do the work during the cycle and then when the coach leaves, everything stops. In this episode of The Coaching Podcast, we’re talking about how instructional coaches can help teachers transition that learning into their teaching by using gradual release with coaching cycles.

The gradual release model is often used to teach students new things. This strategy gradually releases the responsibility from the teacher to the student. It can also work if we're working with teachers on a new concept that they're unfamiliar with, such as rolling out a new literacy program. This model also works with teachers who are struggling significantly in the classroom or who have difficulty implementing things on their own. 

When we use gradual release during coaching cycles, we help teachers learn something new while giving them the support they need to be successful. The gradual release model helps bridge the gap with teachers so they can start taking ownership of their learning and integrate it into their practice.

Differentiating coaching cycles is an excellent way to help teachers get the most out of your work together. Instructional coaches can set up coaching cycles that meet the needs of teachers by using what we know about personality traits and the supports that work best for them. Once a teacher has a good experience with us, they'll likely come back for more.

In this episode, I'm chatting with Dr. Jane Kise, Founder of Differentiated Coaching Associates, about differentiating the coaching cycle. Dr. Kise is an author, trainer, and coach who works with schools to facilitate team development and leadership coaching. She joins me to discuss how to differentiate our work with teachers.

Every coach knows that learning doesn't happen without effective classroom management. If we can get management in place, everything else is easier.

Across the country, we've been hearing that since the pandemic students' behaviors are more intense and classroom management is a bigger challenge. Using Data to Inform Coaching Cycles, Ep. 122 Buzzing with Ms. B: The Coaching Podcast

Instructional coaches need to support all teachers, not only new and struggling ones. Growing teachers is what coaches do and the coaching cycle is how we do it. 

This month on The Coaching Podcast, we're talking about how to make a coaching cycle more effective and different ways to approach it. When you apply the ideas in the shows to your coaching cycles, you'll see changes in teachers and instruction.

In this episode, we're talking about using data to inform coaching cycles. Data can be used before, during, and after a coaching cycle.
