Arrr! stands for READ!!

Lord, I think I've lost it. I was working on this activity pack this week and positively cracking myself up. Sitting on the couch (favorite place) watching Mad Men (favorite show) and laughing my butt off about "ARR stands for Read!" I made it up myself and I thought it was pretty clever.

HAHA! I kept saying. That's so funny. I texted everyone.

"Hunny!" I texted my hunny. "Arrr stands for Read! You know who says? Captain Book says! CAPTAIN BOOK! HAHAHAHA"

"HEY!" I texted my buddy. "Captain Book says Arrr stands for Read! HAHAHA!"

"You're nuts" she responded.
Whatever
Why was it ARR?! Because I had this adorable KPM Doodles pirate clipart that I haven't used yet and I had to use it.
What was I working on, you ask? My superfun "Sailing Through Summer Activity Pack!"

Have I mentioned I'm looping? Well, I am, and I'm more than a little traumatized by this year with my preciously beloved naughties. Each one is naughtier than the next, and let's just say all that naughtiness interfered with their learning much in K-2. So they were a lot of work. Not all of them, I guess. It just feels that way.

After all our hard work, some of them are now just one grade level behind in reading and math, instead of three. So the summer is kind of a big deal. I'm terrified they're going to do nothing over the summer but drool and stare and exercise their thumbs while playing a game that has apparently not improved their spatial reasoning skills like everybody says video games do. And they'll show up again in August, reading cap instead of cape and exercise instead of exactly and saying things like, "What does that O stand for on the place value chart?"

So I really really really want them to think about school things over the summer.
Today my kids worked on it (gluing it together, coloring it - I'm trying to get them excited about actually doing it over the summer. It even includes a letter from the kids to their parents, basically saying, "Hey! Remember me? I'm your kid! Help me, please!"

These are some pictures from our adventures in our activity pack:

Our cute pirate ship craftivity. On the inside, we wrote about what reading habits we were going to build this summer.

Treasure cards! On the math calendar, some spaces have skull & crossbone images, and you have to 'dig for buried treasure' and choose a treasure card (challenge card) from your bag to complete!

Complete pack! Super fun.

This kiddo demanded that I take a snazzy picture of all of her things, even though she wasn't done coloring!

Grab it at TPT or Teacher's Notebook!

  3. This is a great idea. I'm also looping with my students and I'm so nervous about the summer. We've made big gains this year and I'm so worried I'll be disappointed when they get tested at the beginning of next year :/ eeek positive thoughts only!
