Testing Blues
Just a mini-post to say good luck to fourth and fifth graders in Texas on the STAAR!No one knows exactly what it will look like.No one knows exactly how hard it will be.No one knows what the passing rate required is.No one knows because the people who make it are creeps.
But, all that mess aside, good luck Texas teachers! I hope tomorrow (and the next day) aren't too too too terrible and that your students surprise you...in a good way :)
I'm going to put together a little cookie treat for our fourth grade teachers (I taught fourth grade for years and know how ugly it is to watch kids take the writing test) and add on a little poem. I'm thinking,
"Hip hip hooray! Today is your day!Your kids are all writing! They're on their way!
I know that it's stressfulto watch your kids stressso just eat a cookieand hope they do their best!"
I dunno. Maybe I'll change it. But so far, that's the plan.
My kids are taking a practice STAAR (amazing that we put one together, given that TEA has released all of 13 questions in math and about 15 in reading) tomorrow and the next day. So I am prepared to spend hours on end crying and drowning myself in margaritas. After school, of course.

I love the poem! It made me laugh. I am doing testing with 1 of my kiddos tomorrow and Wednesday.

Thanks for the wishes! I totally agree with you...the big, secret STAAR test!!!! Why the mystery??? Ugh! And rumors are abound about what the passing rate will be. Someone is Austin is smiling and counting their money right now...
ReplyDeleteI'm sure your teachers appreciate your support and encouragement!

Confessions of a Fourth Grade Teacher
Good luck to Texas tomorrow! The state of Indiana just did the same thing last week with a new top-secret test. The catch here is third graders HAVE to pass it in order to be moved to fourth grade (only exception being in IEPs). It was painful to watch my kids stress over it. No idea what it takes to pass, but word is we hear after spring break. Yippee!

Oh Chrissy:
ReplyDeleteThat is FAR too much stress for Texas teachers.
I feel so badly that you have to endure the anxiety mixed in with the "top secret" attitude.
As if our jobs weren't difficult enough!
In California. we have two years before the test changes (again).
How nice to treat your teacher friends to cookies.
They'll be so tickled!

Finding JOY in 6th Grade
Aww so sweet! Maybe if you make something cute, you can share it with us all? I'm thinking that would be nice to do for our teachers that are testing, too. Us first graders are lucky...no standardized test for us!

Trudging our way through the 5th grade reading today STAAR in Texas. These guys took the 5th math yesterday. I got sooooo pissed off when I got a look at the answer document and there were 58 questions! Old test had 52 questions and no time limit. Blue print said 50 questions! Thanks for the heads up on 8 field test questions! NOT! Had one student not finish. What those "educated" folks who write and administer the tests don't realize is that 8 additional questions can make or break a kid that is strugging! On a more positive note...loved the poem! May have to do this for my 4th grade teaching friends next year!
